The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, and the Charlotte Hornets Foundation tonight awarded a $10,000 grant to the YMCA of Greensboro’s Teen Achievers program during the Swarm’s YMCA Theme Night game.
“We’re proud that the Swarm and the Charlotte Hornets Foundation are able to support the Triad community,” said Swarm President Steve Swetoha, a member of the YMCA of Greensboro Metropolitan Board. “YMCA Teen Achievers is a tremendous program that provides immense value for the students who participate in it, and we are glad to do our part to help these students as they begin planning for their futures.”
The YMCA Teen Achievers program prepares teens in 8th-12th grades for life beyond high school, such as preparing for college and future career possibilities. The grant will support the 2024 YMCA Teen Achievers College Tours, in which students have the opportunity to tour colleges and universities throughout the East Coast during their spring break.
“We are profoundly grateful for the Greensboro Swarm and Charlotte Hornets Foundation’s generous support of the YMCA of Greensboro’s Teen Achievers program and college tours. For many of the students who attend the college tours, this is their only opportunity to visit colleges outside of their community,” said the YMCA of Greensboro President and CEO Rhonda Anderson. “Their investment not only reflects a belief in our mission, but also an earnest commitment to nurturing the potential of our future leaders. This contribution will undoubtedly empower our teens to positively focus on their future academic and career aspirations.”
The Swarm hosted their annual YMCA Theme Night tonight to honor the programs and positive efforts that the YMCA of Greensboro offers the community. The night included special themed jerseys worn by Swarm players that were available for auction with proceeds benefiting the YMCA of Greensboro.
Last season’s grant was in the form of a scholarship to a student at Bennett College, which went to Samiya Green.
