The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, is proud to announce the official launch of the Greensboro Swarm Rookie/Vet Program, an initiative designed to provide mentorship and leadership development for young students.
Collaborating with the Beyond Sports’ Beyond Recess Program, the Swarm will work with Washington Elementary School to connect players with local youth, fostering personal growth and inspiration through basketball.
The inaugural class of rookies will include six students currently enrolled in fourth and fifth grade at Washington Elementary. These children were selected after completing an application process, which included an essay detailing why they wished to be part of the program.
“This partnership with the Greensboro Swarm's Rookie to Vet program and Beyond Sports' Beyond Recess Program will be transformative for our students,” said Paul Travers, Washington Elementary Principal. “This opportunity and exposure break down barriers for our students, opening their world to endless possibilities.”
Swarm players will pair with the elementary students, providing guidance, encouragement, and educational support. This new initiative aligns with the organization’s community pillars of education, health, and wellness to encourage community engagement and youth development while using the power of sports to make a meaningful impact.
“It truly is an honor to partner with the Greensboro Swarm on such an impactful program,” said Mike Kennedy, Beyond Sports Co-founder. “This experience for our students in the Beyond Recess program elevates their access to leadership opportunities. It exposes them to people in our community who believe in them and will continue to help them as they grow.”
The program will include interactive sessions for the remainder of the 2024-25 season focused on basketball development and personal mentorship. It aims to instill confidence and a strong work ethic in the next generation. The rookies will continue their mentorship program into the off-season by connecting with the Swarm business staff and exploring new perspectives on the business side of basketball.
The Greensboro Swarm is committed to making the Rookie/Vet Program a lasting and growing initiative to help develop future leaders within the Greensboro community.
