The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, announced today that the team raised more than $7,480 to be donated to nonprofits through auctions during four game-worn themed jersey nights during the 2022-23 season. The winners of each auction were also able to meet the player whose jersey they received to get it autographed and take a picture.
“We’re proud to be able to use our platform to help support these great nonprofits and the work that they do in our community,” said Swarm President Steve Swetoha. “We also want to thank our partners at Blue Ridge Companies, Greensboro Automotive Group and Novant Health on each of the themed jersey nights for their participation and support in helping us to raise awareness of these groups and their initiatives.”
The first of the four themed jersey nights came on November 11, when the Swarm held their first Military Night, presented by Blue Ridge Companies. The jersey auction benefitted the Garret Torney Foundation, which strives to help veterans battling PTSD. The organization raises funds and partners with like-minded charities to ensure that those who served their country can have experiences that bring their passion and purpose together.
During Black History Month, the team held its second annual HBCU Night, presented by Greensboro Automotive Group, on February 10. The night featured a special themed jersey designed by Brianna Grant, an alumnus of Florida A&M University, which was chosen through the Swarm’s jersey design contest for HBCU students. The proceeds benefitted North Carolina’s A&T’s Department of Liberal Studies, specifically African American Studies, through the Charlotte Hornets Foundation.
On March 24, when the Swarm hosted Frontline Workers Night, presented by Novant Health, proceeds from the jersey auction benefited the Novant Health Foundation’s Employee Emergency Fund, which provides financial support for frontline healthcare workers who are facing challenges so that they may be cared for just as they care for the community. The season finale the following day was the annual “Hornets Takeover” game, which celebrates the connections between the Swarm and Hornets in a variety of ways, including a special uniform. The game-worn themed jersey auction for this contest benefitted the Charlotte Hornets Foundation, the charitable arm of Hornets Sports & Entertainment that encompasses each of the organization’s entities. The Charlotte Hornets Foundation aims to strengthen the region through intentional partnerships, charitable giving and social projects in the areas of education, hunger, military care and wellness.
